Employment Supports

Supporting adults with developmental disabilities to live independently, with flexible staff support tailored to individual needs and goals.

About the Program

The Supported Employment Program helps adults with developmental disabilities prepare for, find, and maintainmeaningful paid employment in their communities. Guided by the employment support service principles set by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS), the program is built on the belief that employment is a key pathway to inclusion, independence, and personal fulfillment.

Employment supports are individualized and centred on each person’s strengths, interests, skills, and career goals. Participants are actively involved in identifying the type of work they want, the supports they need, and the pace at which they progress. Employment plans are flexible and evolve as goals, skills, and interests change.

The program supports individuals to develop job-related and transferable skills, including workplace communication, time management, problem-solving, and self-advocacy. Where needed, supports may also include resume development, interview preparation, and workplace readiness training to build confidence and success.

Supported Employment staff work collaboratively with local employers to identify inclusive job opportunities and appropriate job matches. This includes educating employers about inclusive hiring practices, workplace accommodations, and the value of a diverse workforce, while ensuring job expectations align with the individual’s abilities and support needs.

Ongoing supports are available to help individuals succeed and remain employed. This may include job coaching, workplace accommodations, skill reinforcement, and problem-solving supports. The level and duration of support are tailored to the individual and adjusted over time to promote independence and long-term job retention.

Employment supports are delivered in real workplaces within the community. The program emphasizes natural supports, inclusion, and community connections, helping individuals build relationships with coworkers and fully participate in workplace culture.
