Family Support Services

Caregiver Respite

Supporting adults with developmental disabilities to live independently, with flexible staff support tailored to individual needs and goals.

About the Program

The Caregiver Respite Program is designed to support families and caregivers of adults with developmental disabilities by providing access to short-term respite services. This program recognizes the vital role caregivers play and aims to promote caregiver well-being, sustainability, and balance.

Through this program, eligible families are referred through Developmental Services Ontario (DSO) and are provided with a family-managed respite fund. Families may use this funding to purchase respite supports that best meet their individual needs and circumstances. Respite services may be delivered in the family home or in the community, depending on the type of support arranged.

Families are responsible for managing their respite funding and may choose their preferred service providers. Once services have been delivered, families submit eligible expenses for reimbursement in accordance with program guidelines. This flexible, family-directed approach allows caregivers to arrange respite in a way that aligns with their schedules, cultural preferences, and support needs.

The Caregiver Respite Program helps families take planned breaks from caregiving responsibilities while ensuring individuals with developmental disabilities continue to receive safe, respectful, and meaningful support.
